Camp Pendleton, CA
CLR-17 Family Readiness Officer: Curtis Winfree
Hello! My name is Curtis Winfree and I am the civilian Family Readiness Officer (FRO) for Combat Logistics Regiment-17 (CLR-17). I am a Marine Corps Veteran with 22 years of active military service and I am honored to serve the Marines, Sailors and families of CLR-17. It is my hope that you will take full advantage of the Family Readiness program and any of the personal experiences and or lessons learned I have had over the years to benefit your family. Thank you for all you do as you continue to represent the best of what this Nation has to offer!
The Commandant has recently updated, reformatted and enhanced the USMC’s Family Readiness Program. One of the new changes is having a civilian Family Readiness Officer who reports directly to the unit’s Commanding Officer, does not deploy and is dedicated to supporting the mission of Family Readiness on a full time basis.
The Commandant also redefined "family" to now include anyone the Marine or Sailor designates as his or her family. This has opened up the Family Readiness Program to all family dynamics – Single Marines with or without children and married Marines/Sailors with or without children. We have welcomed parents, in-laws, grandparents, siblings, aunts and uncles of Marines and Sailors into the program!
A third and significant change is the new level of resources available to all Marines, Sailors and their designated family member. In addition to FRO support, the entire branch of Marine Corps Family Team Building has added significant staff and expanded their programs to serve this new community of Family. For example, the most popular MCFTB class in the Marine Corps is L.I.N.K.S. (Lifestyles, Insights, Networking, Knowledge and Skills). This class was originally designed and offered only to spouses. MCFTB has now designed L.I.N.K.S. for Kids, Tweens, Teens, Parents and Marines!
As the Family Readiness Officer, my job is to support the Marines, Sailors and families of CLR-17 with any family readiness related needs regardless of deployment status. I am non-deployable and work on a full time basis. Living the military life is a wonderful experience and while it has many benefits, it can also be a challenge when faced with things like moving and deployments. My goal is to help you live this lifestyle to its most positive potential and lend support by connecting you with the many excellent resources available through the USMC and our local community.
I can offer many types of support ranging from something as simple as resource phone numbers, to Base Housing, WIC information/referral, financial/educational counseling and additional free or reduced priced resources such as food and furniture items. I also manage all of the pre-deployment and Return & Reunion briefs to help better prepare service members and their families for the most successful deployment and reunion possible.
For anyone interested in becoming a Family Readiness Volunteer, and that now includes parents, siblings etc, for your Marine or Sailor, please contact me! Volunteerism is an important element of our Family Readiness Program; we need and value your help as together we reach out to our CLR-17 community! We offer free training and continued Volunteer educational support. Please contact me or our Deputy FRO, Sgt Mark Ribbot, at anytime and we will be happy to answer any questions regarding the program and how you can make a difference by getting involved!
To ensure CLR-17 families can take advantage of the many wonderful resources being continually directed to me, I email weekly updates to everyone on my distribution list. The content varies each week based upon what information I’ve received. A few examples of what I pass on are local free or special events, activities open to military families, personal and professional development opportunities and discounts offered to military members and families. If you would like to be added to this list, please contact me via the email address below.
It is an honor to be a part of the CLR-17 family! Once again, thank you for all you do as a family in defending the freedoms we so richly enjoy as a Nation.
Sincerely,
Curtis Winfree
