  • Marines with 9th Communication Battalion prepare to begin the new swim qualification at Camp Pendleton, Calif., Dec. 1. Marines must now qualify with boots on for the entire exam.
  • Maj. Gen. Charles M. Gurganus, commanding general, I Marine Expeditionary Force (Forward), participates in a simulated press conference with Afghan role players during the I MEF (Fwd) Mission Rehearsal Exercise at Camp Pendleton, Calif., Dec. 13. Before the press conference, Gurganus participated in a mock shura. During the shura, he spoke with role players about issues concerning the security transition, which will take place as I MEF (Fwd) partners with coalition forces to train and develop Afghan forces. Gurganus oversees more than 6,000 Marines and other coalition forces and will assume command of Regional Command-Southwest from II MEF (Fwd) as I MEF (Fwd) deploys this spring.
  • Col. Steven Hanson, the commanding officer of I Marine Expeditionary Force Headquarters Group, addresses families of I MHG as they kick off of the Christmas party at Camp Pendleton, Calif., Dec. 17. This party precedes a year-long deployment.
  • Marines with the Battle Simulation Center, Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, Calif., train with the Marine Air Ground Combat Team Training Warfare Simulator at Camp Pendleton, Dec. 14. The center is hosting the Mission Rehearsal Exercise for I Marine Expeditionary Force (Forward). The MRX is designed to test the standard operating procedures of the I MEF (Fwd) as they prepare to deploy to Afghanistan and take command of Regional Command Southwest during the spring.
  • Santa Claus asks children what they want for Christmas at the I Marine Expeditionary Force Headquarters Group Christmas party at Camp Pendleton, Calif., Dec. 17. The line to visit Claus lasted for more than two hours as children waited patiently to see the big man in red. The I MHG Family Readiness Office hosted the holiday party. I MHG is scheduled to deploy this winter.
