The end of February and beginning of March have proven to bring more rain than we expected. What was deep moon dust and shallow water features have been transformed into thick, gnarly mud and large swamps that have been able to swallow up patrolling Marines all the way up to their hips. Despite the changing landscape, the Marines have continued their constant presence among the populace and relentless pressure on the enemy. The locals in our area of never been more comfortable and open to our presence have been more helpful identifying civil projects and notifying Marines of possible danger. They are truly making a difference in the southern Helmand River valley.

Range 109 prepares 3rd LAR for gunnery qualifications

Dragoon Company shot up Combat Center Range 109 to accomplish more then the satisfaction of sending rounds downrange during a 25 mm Bushmaster chain gun shoot Monday.
The live-fire exercise was held to familiarize more than 70 light armored vehicle crewmen from Company D, 3rd Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion, with their roles and prepare fresh gunners for the challenges they will face on Range 500 during their gunnery qualifications, said 1st Lt. Blake J. Rice, the Dragoons’ executive officer.

AFTER WEEKS OF SIMULATOR TRAINING AND GUN DRILLS, THE MORTAR SECTION FINALLY GOT A CHANCE TO SHOWCASE ITS SKILLS DURING A LIVE-FIRE 81MM MORTAR SHOOT AT RANGE 106. FOR MANY OF THE MORTARMEN, IT WAS THE FIRST LIVE SHOOT IN THE OPERATING FORCES. UNDER THE DIRECTION OF THEIR FDC, THEY FIRED A VARIETY OF DIFFERENT MISSIONS DURING THE DAY AND AT NIGHT, TO INCLUDE COORDINATED ILLUMINATION WITH HIGH EXPLOSIVE ROUNDS. THE PLATOON'S SCOUT TEAM LEADERS CAME OUT ON THE SECOND DAY OF TRAINING TO PRACTICE LIVE FIRE CALL FOR FIRE.
