Lieutenant Colonel James H. Bain

Commanding Officer, 3d Combat Engineer Battalion

Your Marines and Sailors here in Afghanistan continue to impress the hell out of me. They are dedicated to each other, loyal to their mission, strive for perfection daily and never lose sight of our objectives.

The daily grind here is different for everyone. Your loved ones are dis-persed throughout Helmand Province supporting every Infantry Battalion, with little supervision and making very difficult decisions in a decentralized environment. They have executed everything we have been tasked with and made it look easy. On a daily basis, I sit back and watch everything unfold and I am always amazed at our Marines and Sailors.

We bid farewell to Bravo Company 1st CEB as they are heading home. We wish Capt Mitchell and his Company well and to have good times upon their return. They have done a magnificent job. They will be replaced by Engineer Co, 3rd Combat Assault Battalion from Okinawa.

3d CEB is close to coming home. While there is still much work to do, the light is beginning to show at the end of the tunnel. However, know this: your Marines and Sailors will continue to fight until the day we get on the plane home. It is what they do and they are the best at it.

James H. Bain
Lieutenant Colonel
Commanding Officer, 3d CEB
