1st Battalion, 5th Marines
Lineage
1917-1919
Activated on 25 May 1917 at Quantico, Virginia as the 1st Battalion, 5th Regiment. Deployed during June 1917 to France and participated in the offensive campaigns as Aisne, Aisne-Marne, St. Mihel and Meuse-Argonne and he defensive campaigns at Toulon-Troyon, Château-Thierry, Marabache and Limey. Participated from December 1918 to July 1919 in the occupation of the German Rhineland. Relocated during August 1919 to Quantico, Virginia and deactivated on 13 august 1919.
1921-1925
Reactivated on 17 May 1921 at Quantico, Virginia as 1st Battalion, 5th Regiment, 4th Brigade. Redesignated on 15 March 1925 as the 1st Battalion, 5th Regiment.
1926-1933
Deployed during February 1926 to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Relocated during September 1926 to Quantico, Virginia. Deployed during March 1927 to Nicaragua. Deactivated on 2 January 1933.
1934-1941
Reactivated on 1 September 1934 as the 1st Battalion, 5th Marines, Fleet Marine Force. Deployed during September 1940 to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. On 1 February 1941 assigned to the 1st Maine Division, Fleet Marine Force. Relocated during April 1941 to Quantico, Virginia.
1942-1947
Deactivated on 6 January 1942. Reactivated on 19 January 1942 at New River, North Carolina. Deployed during June 1942 to Wellington, New Zealand and participated in the following World War II campaigns
Guadalcanal, New Guinea, New Britain, Peleliu and Okinawa. Deployed during October 1945 to Tangku, China. Redeployed during May 1947 to Guam. Deactivated 1 October 1947.
1949-1958
Reactivated on 1 October 1949 at Camp Pendleton, CA. Deployed during August 1950 to Korea and from Pusan Perimeter to Inchon to Seoul to the Chosin reservoir to the East Central Front finishing on the Western Front, where it participated in the defense of the Korean Demilitarized Zone from July 1953 to February 1955. Relocated during March 1955 to Camp Pendleton, CA.
1959-1965
Redeployed during August 1959 to Camp Schwab, Okinawa and assigned to the 3d Marine Division, Fleet Marine Force. Redesignated on 15 June 1965 as BLT 1/5, 1st Marine brigade, Fleet Marine Force and relocated to Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii.
1966-1974
Deployed during March 1966 to the Republic of Vietnam as part of the special landing force. Redesignated on 8 May 1966 as the 1st Battalion, 5th Marines, and 1st Marine Division. Participated in the war in Vietnam from March 1966 to April 1971, operation from Rung Sat, Chu Lai, Que Son, Hieu Nhon, Phu Loc, Phu Bai, An Hoa and Da Nang. Relocated during April-May 1971 to Camp Pendleton, CA. Deactivated on 15 June 1974.
1975-1998
Reactivated on 31 March 197 at Camp Pendleton, CA. Participated from July to December 1975 in Operation New Arrival, the relocation of refugees from Indochina. Participated in Operations DESERT SHIELD and DESERT STORM from August 1990-March 1991. Element participated in Operation DESERT THUNDER, Iraq, from February to June 1998.
1999-2008
Deployed during February 2003 to Kuwait in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM. Participated in Operation IRAQI FREEDOM I, from March to May 2003. Participated in Operation IRAQI FREEDOM II from February to July 2004. Participated in operation IRAQI FREEDOM 04-06 from February to September 2005.
May-December, 2009
Deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM.
