Meaning of the 3d Combat Engineer Battalion Emblem

The 3D CEB Emblem as it exists today is a compilation of many past 3D CEB logos, as well as a method of recognizing those combat engineers who have gone before in 3D CEB, CEC, and before. The following bullets explain the meaning of several of the Emblems attributes:

  • The three sided scarlet shield has been used by the 3D Combat Engineer Battalion for as long as can be researched. The scarlet and white rope surrounding the shield represents the traditional and historic colors of engineers and sappers dating back to the European middle-ages.
  • The castle is a uniquely American symbol representing all engineers, which dates back to the 19th century U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Imposed on the castle is a gold and black caltrop. The caltrop was an ancient military device with four metal points so arranged that when any three points were on the ground the fourth was projected upwards as a hazard to the hooves of the Calvary. It represents the origins of the modern land mine and our units specific designation as Combat Engineers. It is also the symbol of the 3D Marine Division and represents our history with the 3D Marine Division.
  • The motto “Demolition is the Mission” represents our traditional mission as sappers, and the fact that we will continue to train to conduct our traditional role in conventional warfare, while being prepared to support counter insurgency operations in OIF, OEF, or wherever else we are called upon to serve.
