SgtMaj Scott A. Samuels

Sergeant Major Samuels was born in New York. Upon graduating from the University of Tennessee/Knoxville in 1985 with a BA of History/Political Science, he enlisted in the Marine Corps in March of 1986. Upon graduation from Boot Camp he attended Infantry Training School, Camp Pendleton, California. In August 1986 he was assigned to Marine Barracks, Subic Bay, Republic of the Philippines. He served as a guard, Corporal of the Guard, and patrol leader. SgtMaj Samuels was promoted to Corporal in March of 1987.

In November of 1987, SgtMaj Samuels transferred to 3d Battalion, 1st Marines as an Infantry Fire Team Leader, Squad Leader, and Machine Gun Section Leader. While there, his unit was deployed on WESTPAC in 1989 and a Special Purpose Marine Air Ground Task Force to Honduras in 1990, where he participated in MAGTF Alpha Tarus. SgtMaj Samuels was meritoriously promoted to Sergeant in March of 1990. SgtMaj Samuels participated in Operation DESERT SHIELD and DESERT STORM during the Gulf War. In May of 1992 he applied for and received orders to Marine Security Guard School, Quantico, Virginia. Upon graduating, he was assigned to the American Embassy, Pretoria, South Africa and the American Embassy, Muscat, Oman as a Watch Stander. SgtMaj Samuels was meritoriously promoted to Staff Sergeant in January of 1994 and he was reassigned duties as the Detachment Commander for the American Embassy in Khartoum, Sudan.

In November of 1994, he transferred to 3d Battalion, 4th Marines, where he served as an Infantry Platoon Sergeant and Assistant Operations Chief. SgtMaj Samuels deployed to Okinawa in 1995 and 1997 in support of the Unit Deployment Program. In March of 1998, SgtMaj Samuels transferred to Marine Corps Recruit Depot, San Diego, California. He attended Drill Instructor School Class 3-98 and upon graduating, he was assigned to Company C, 1st Recruit Training Battalion. He served as a Junior, Senior, Chief Drill Instructor, and Company First Sergeant. SgtMaj Samuels was promoted to Gunnery Sergeant in September of 1998.

In August of 2001, SgtMaj Samuels was transferred to 1st Battalion, 4th Marines as Company Gunnery Sergeant for Headquarters and Service Company and Alpha Company. He was deployed in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM in December of 2001 and Operation IRAQI FREEDOM I in January of 2003. SgtMaj Samuels was promoted to First Sergeant in March of 2003 and transferred to 3d Battalion, 1st Marines as Company First Sergeant for Headquarters and Service Company and India Company. While assigned with 3d Battalion, 1st Marines he participated in Operation IRAQI FREEDOM I AND II. Upon returning to the States, SgtMaj Samuels requested orders and transferred to I&I Company I, 3d Battalion, 24th Marines as the I&I 1stSgt in June of 2005.

SgtMaj Samuels was selected and promoted to his current rank and reported for orders with Recruiting Station Nashville, Tennessee in March 2006. From March 2006 until February of 2009, SgtMaj Samuels was the Recruiting Station Nashville SgtMaj. In February of 2009, SgtMaj Samuels received orders to 3d Battalion, 1st Marines as Battalion Sergeant Major, where he assumed his duties in April of 2009.

SgtMaj Samuels' schools include Infantry Squad Leaders Course, Infantry Platoon Sergeants Course, Career Course, Advance Course, First Sergeant Course, Marine Security Guard School, and Drill Instructor School.
