Sergeant Major's Letter to the Families

I understand this might be the first deployment for you and your Marine. For many of you this could one of several deployments your family has al-ready experienced. Some of you have been married 20 years, and some a few months. I know no matter how many deployments, it’s never easy. How-ever, you should all take comfort and pride in the support you constantly show for your Marine.

Failure to plan is planning to fail. Over the coming months you and your Marine will have the opportunity to plan for the deployment. It is important to have a support network established and get educated on the resources avail-able to you and your family while you’re Marine is away.

Some areas I think that will require your attention are as follows: Family, finances, and mental preparation.

- Family: You and your Marine must have that strong, trusting relation-ship. Know where to go to get the assistance needed to help solidify that.

- Finances: Know that you and your family will be receiving extra pay during this time. Together have a plan to save and use that money.

- Mental Prep: Be strong and try not to dwell on the negatives. High-light the positives instead!

Some parting thoughts: Your husband is a United States Marine. Be proud of him! He needs your support during the deployment work-up and while he is deployed. We need him focused on the mission. Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Don’t think you’re the first one with a problem. Trust me, we all have had problems, but they can be worked out. Military One Source is a great resource to assist in a wide array of issues. In addition, the Chaplain, Mr. Robb, and I are standing by to help in any way we can.

The Marine Corps experience is what you make of it. Make it a good one! Have fun, and enjoy your time as a member of the Marine Corps family!

It is a great pleasure to serve as your Marine’s Sergeant Major.
